Winner Pianoduo Festival Composition Competition: Mattias Spee
The winner of the 2nd Pianoduo Festival Composition Competition is the 28-year-old Mattias Spee. The jury was impressed by his concept, the jazzy and Stravinsky-like elements, and the excellent pianistic writing. An honorary mention was awarded to the 23-year-old Apollon Kalamenios.
The Pianoduo Festival Composition Competition (PFCC) is a competition for young composers up to the age of 35. With this competition, the artistic management aims both to support young composers in their careers and to make an essential contribution to the development of the repertoire for piano duo. For this competition, composers were invited to submit a sketch of no more than one minute. An expert jury, consisting of pianist Ralph van Raat, composer Kate Moore, Jonás Bisquert (programmer at Gaudeamus and composer), and Pianoduo Scholtes & Janssens, selected the winner, who is given the opportunity to develop their piece into a full composition of 6 to 7 minutes. The piece will receive its premiere during the 14th festival in October 2026. A cash prize of 1,500 euros is also awarded.
The first edition of the PFCC took place in 2022. At that time, composer Niels van der Weiden won with his composition Gloed. An honorary mention went to Thomas van Dun for his Tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow. Both pieces were performed by Pianoduo Scholtes & Janssens at the festival.
